101     ELI OATMAN

 

 

101      ELI5     (George4, George3, John2, Johannes1), son of George and Ann (Terrill) Oatman, was born at Arlington, Bennington County, Vermont, in the year 1777 and died at Middletown Springs, Rutland County, Vermont, 30 May 1851 at the age of 75. 

 

He married 28 February 1800 in Pawlet, Rutland County, Vermont, Mary, daughter of Joel and Patience Symonds/Simonds.  Mary was born in 1781 in Pawlet, and died 16 February 1861 in Middletown, Vermont, at the age of 80.

 

Eli was a farmer and lived on the farm originally cleared by his father and is believed to have built the present farm house on the property.  He was very influential in civil affairs and held many town offices.

460      Joel, b. 1807; d. after 1877; m. Harriet(te) M. Pye of London, England

 

461      Calista E./Celestia, b. 1809; d. 1878; m. Russell H. Mallory.  He was b. ca 1804, VT.  In 1838 they moved to the town of Lake Geneva, Walworth Co., WI, where Russell was a merchant before his death in March 1852.  Their three children were adopted by Calista's brother Cyril (#464) after Russell's death.  Children, surname Mallory (residences given in Cyril's Will):

 

A         Mary A., b. ca 1841, WI; m. Frederick Goodsell ca 1861; he b. Nov 1836 NY; Fred was a druggist in Waterloo, IA, before becoming a fuel and feed dealer in Moorhead, Clay Co., MN.  Children, surname Goodsell:

B         Emma E., b. Jul 1844, WI; m. Owen Bucklin (b. Oct 1823, MA, d. before 1910); lived in Dundee, IL.  Emma may have been married to a man named Miner first; she was listed as Emma Miner in 1870 and 1880 in Geneva, Walworth Co., WI, with her uncle Cyril Oatman, and was shown as widowed in 1880.  After marrying Owen Bucklin, they moved to Dundee Twp., Kane CO., IL.  After Owen died, she moved to Denver, CO, and was living with her sister Hattie Williams.  She had no children.

 

C         Harriet J. “Hattie”, b. ca 1848, WI;  m. ca 1879 Ivan Williams, b. ca 1849; lived in Denver, CO;  Children, surname Williams:

462      Emily, b. 1811; d. 1836, Middletown, VT; m. Augustus Knapp of Birdstown, IL

 

463      Lucien, b. 1813; d. 3 Mar 1861, Middletown, VT; bur. Oatman Plot, Middletown Springs, VT;  it is not certain whether he was married.  However, the 1850 census of Middletown,  VT, lists Lucien 37, Mary 26 (wife or sister?), and Emily 14 (who could be a daughter or a niece).

 

464      Cyril Leach, b. 10 Apr 1815; d. 17 May 1889, Lake Geneva, Walworth Co., WI; he was unmarried but adopted his sister Calista's three children after the death of their father.

 

465      Ellen, b. 1817; d. 1887; m. Dr. Nathan Deane of Georgia, VT.  After Nathan's death, Ellen lived with her brother Joel Oatman in New York City.  She is bur. Oatman Plot, Middletown Springs, VT.  Children, surname Deane:

 

A         John, lived in Poultney, VT (information from Will of Cyril Oatman)

 

466      Mary, b. 1820; d. 1895; m. Joseph Bannister, Middletown, VT; he b. 1866.  After Joseph's death, Mary lived with her brother Joel Oatman in New York City.  She had no known children.

 

467      Jane, b. 1822; d. 7 Jul 1848, Middletown, VT, at age 26 of tuberculosis; m. Samuel Willett, Pawlet, VT.  They had no known children.

 

468      Demis E., b. 1825; d. 1869; m. Col. Milo Smith "of the West".  In 1850, Demis was living with her sister Calista and the Mallory family in East Troy, Walworth Co., WI.  She had no known children.
