1335     GEORGE L. OATMAN

 

 

1335    GEORGE L.7     (Parker6, Asahel5, Benjamin4, George3, John2, Johannes1), son of Parker and Lucina (Austin) Oatman, was born at Tillsonburg, Oxford County, Ontario, 11 July 1854, and died 24 March 1933, St. Clair County, Michigan.

 

George came to Michigan with his parents when he was one year old.  On 14 November 1888, he married Emma, daughter of Joseph and Jane Carnahan of Atkins, St. Clair County, Michigan, who was born 5 April 1862 and died 22 March 1933.  He was a farmer by occupation and owned a fine property in Greenwood Township, St. Clair County, where he resided with his wife Emma and son George Raymond. 

 

During the night of 22 March 1933, the farmhouse caught fire in some unknown manner and was entirely destroyed.  Mrs. Oatman and son George were burned in the house and Mr. Oatman was found unconscious in the yard and died some days later at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Harold Newcomb, where he had been taken after the fire. 

 

There were no eyewitnesses to the tragedy; however, it was apparent from the position of the bodies that Mr. Oatman, who was an invalid and confined to his bed, had been carried out by his son George Raymond who had then returned into the house to assist his mother.  Apparently both had been overcome with the smoke and flames and perished in the house.

 

Mr. Oatman was a member of Brockway Lodge, No. 316, F & A M, which body con- ducted the services in Spring Hill Cemetery where the family is buried.  They were survived by four daughters in 1933:  Mrs. Clarence R. Conlan, Detroit;  Mr. Edward Firth, Pontiac;  Mrs. Gilbert Clegg, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Mrs. Harold Newcomb; two brothers, Albert Oatman, Yale, and Charles Oatman of Port Huron, Michigan; and eight grandsons.
