1528 ORLIN OATMAN
1528 ORLIN7 (Lyman 6, Eliakim5, George4, George3,John 2, Johannes1), son of
Lyman and Lucy (Stoddard) Oatman, was born in 1839 in Montville, Ohio, and died
17 March 1915 in Medina, Medina County, Ohio.
He married, 19 July 1856, probably in Mansfield, Ohio, Emily, daughter
of Henry (1811-1865) and Mary (Harman) Lemon (1812-1865); she was born 24
October 1838 and died 23 May 1923 in Medina.
Orlin
was born just outside of Medina, in Montville, and grew up in Medina, where he
lived all of his adult life. He was in
the meat and hardware business, and owned Oatman Hardware in Medina. His wife, Emily, was a sister of Simeon
Oatman's wife Mary Floretta "Flora" Lemon (#1532). Emily and Flora's parents were both born in
England and married there on 4 November 1830 in the Parish of Brighthelmston,
County Sussex. At the time of their
marriage, Henry was a marble cutter.
Their first child, Charlotte (Lemon) Harry (called Aunt Shat by her
relatives in Medina) was born in England.
After her birth, the Lemons came to this country and settled in
Mansfield, Ohio. Emily was their second
child.
Both
Orlin and Emily are buried in Spring Grove Cemetery, Medina, Ohio, in the
Oatman plot.
The
Lemon family Bible is in the possession of Barbara Hawthorne, as is the
marriage certificate of Henry and Mary Lemon.
In
addition to the following, Orlin and Emily also had four other children, none
of whom survived: 1) Willie, their
firstborn, who died at the age of 12; 2) a baby born between Arthur and
Jessie; 3) Effie, born 2 May 1876,
Medina, Ohio, and died at 22 months; 4)
a baby boy born after Roy and lived 5 days.

Arthur was injured as a child, as evidenced by the following article:
"On
Saturday June 15th, while Stow was raising his centre pole for the show [in]
Medina, when the pole was elevated at about 45̊ it shied and fell upon
Artie, son of O. Oatman, a boy about five years old, breaking his thigh and
otherwise injuring him.
"The
boy was taken to his residence and cared for by three physicians.
"This
sad accident should be a warning to Mr. Stow & Co., and all others under like
circumstances to keep boys at a proper distance, especially at the time of
raising their centre pole, as it is im- possible for parents to always have an
eye on their boys in time of shows.
"Oatman
has sued the Stow's for $1,500 damages in the Court of common pleas." (28 June 1867)
