3302    ARCHIE8     (Warren7, George6, Oscar5, Benjamin4, George3, John2, Johannes1), son of Warren and Clarissa (Hicks) Oatman, was born in Springford, Oxford County, Ontario, 13 September 1861, and died in March 1933.

 

Per marriage records in Oxford County, Ontario, Archie married Grauces Leazel “Frankie” Smith on 14 December 1885 in Springford.  He and Frankie were living in St. Thomas, Ontario, 1895.  In addition to the following children, they had a son Archie, who died 7 September 1895, at the age of one month.  All of the children except Wilfred Earl were born in Springford, Oxford County, Ontario.

Pearson.  The 1911 census of Delhi, Norfolk North Co., ON, lists Francis Oatman, a granddaughter born March 1907, living with Harry and Mary Pearson, apparently a daughter of Arthur and Estella.

5904    Miraum Mildred, b. 3 Dec 1895; d. 1968; m. William Hicks.  (This birth date is in conflict with a newspaper article from the Tillsonburg Observer, 13 Sep 1895, which states:  "In Springford, 7 September 1895 died Archie, infant son of Archibald Oatman of St Thomas, age 1 month."  This would indicate that Miraum and Archie were born only five months apart.)

 

5905    Elmer Ross Erskin Dewey, b. 4 Jun 1898; m. Eva Margaret (Wilma) Powell, 5 Dec 1931.  E. Ross died 8 Nov 1976 in Kelowna, BC.  He worked for the Royal Bank in Victoria in 1920 and with the Provincial Government Service in Alice Arm, Anyox, Stewart, Grand Forks and Kelowna, where he retired as Government Agent in 1963.  He was a 50-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion and a member of Prince Charles Lodge No. 153, AF and AM, Kelowna.  Children, surname Oatman:

5906    Warren Russell, (picture) b. 19 Feb 1905; d. 25 Oct 1964; bur. Springford Cemetery, Springford, ON; m. Bertha Dunn.  Russell was a professional hockey player, who played for the Minneapolis Rockets 1924-25, Victoria Cougars 1925-26, Detroit Cougars, Montreal Maroons and Windsor Hornets 1926-27, Montreal Maroons 1927-28, Montreal Maroons and New York Rangers 1928-29, and Hamilton Tigers and Niagara Falls Cataracts 1929-30.  A car accident with a bad leg injury ended his career in March 1930.  He was married and lived in Simcoe, ON, and operated a variety store and pool room.

             WARREN RUSSELL OATMAN

             OTTERVILLE.  -- Former professional hockey player, who saw action with three teams in the N.H.L., Warren Russell Oatman died Sunday at Keswick, Ont., in his 60th year.

             A Tillsonburg native, he attended Otterville school and lived for 15 years in Simcoe, where he started his hockey career.  In 1925 he went west to play for Victoria Cougars, and later performed with Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Maroons and New York Rangers before finishing his hockey days with Buffalo.

             A brother, Eddie Oatman, now of Minneapolis, Minn., also won fame in hockey.

            Survivors are his wife the former Bertha Dunn, and a son, Jerry, of Keswick; a sister, Mrs. William Hicks of Tampa, Fla.; three brothers, Wilfred of Springford, Eddie of Minneapolis, Minn., and Ross of Kelowna, B.C.

             Resting at the Addison Funeral Home, Otterville, where service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m.  Interment in Springford Cemetery.
