373 DARIUS OATMAN

373 DARIUS⁶ (Darius⁵, Benjamin⁴, George³, John², Johannes¹), son of Darius and Jerushia Oatman, was born at Adams Center, Jefferson County, New York, in 1821. (Vital records of Oxford County, Ontario, state that Darius was born and/or baptized in Rochester, New York.) He removed with his father, in 1833, to South Norwich Township, Oxford County, Ontario, where he was married on 25 September 1841 to Sarah "Sally" McCollow, who died 12 May 1892, at the age of 67 yr, 7 mo, 13 dy. Darius was a farmer and said to be a great hunter. According to the census records, they were both Methodist. He died 27 April 1910 at the age of 90 and is buried in the New Road Cemetery at Tillsonburg, Ontario, adjacent to his farm.

The exact number of his children is unknown, but the following have been compiled according to the 1851, 1861 and 1871 census records of Oxford County, Ontario, and Darius' obituary of 28 April 1910 in the Tillsonburg Liberal, which stated he was survived by sons, Norman and Truman, "of Holton, Mich.", Frank and Nelson "of St. Thomas", and Angus "at home", and one daughter, Mrs. P. F. Johnston of Otterville.
