375     ELI OATMAN

 

 

375      ELI6     (Darius5, Benjamin4, George3, John2, Johannes1), son of Darius and Jerushia Oatman, was born at Adams Center, Jefferson County, New York, 12 July 1825, and died 11 April 1886 at South Norwich, Oxford County, Ontario, of "asthma and inflammation of the lungs."

 

He removed with his father in 1833 to South Norwich, where he married in 1846 to Eltha McCollow; she was born 28 January 1829 in South Norwich, Oxford County, Ontario, and died 28 January 1906 at the home of her son William, where she had resided since her husband's death in 1886.

 

The family settled on a farm near Tillsonburg, Ontario.  Although they were listed as Baptists in the 1851 census, Eli was later to join the New Road Methodist Church, of which Eltha had been a member most of her life and near which they are both buried. 

 

Eltha's obituary from the Tillsonburg Observer of 1 February 1906 reads:

 

"Was a Pioneer of S. Norwich

Death of Mrs. Eltha Oatman

 

                        Mrs. Eltha Oatman, one of the pioneers of South Norwich, died on Sunday, aged seventy-seven years.  She had been ill a long time and was cared for in the kindest manner possible by her son, William and wife, with whom she lived after the death of her husband nineteen years ago.

 

                        Mrs. Oatman was born in South Norwich and forty-six years ago moved onto the homestead on which she died.  She was a member of the Free Methodist Church nearly all her long life.

 

                        She is survived by seven children.  They are:  John and William and Mrs. Singer of South Norwich; Lorne of North Norwich; Mrs. Patterson of Argyle, Mich.; Mrs. Tilton of Steveston, B.C.; Mrs. James Rodgers of Tillsonburg.  The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon and proceeded to the New Road church, where a service was held.  The interment was made in the New Road Cemetery."

1380    Caroline, b. 1852 in ON; m. ca 1878 in Norfolk, ON, John R. Patterson, who was b. in CAN and d. bef 1900; moved to Argyle, MI.  After John’s death, Caroline lived with her son Eli.  One unknown child died.  Children, surname Patterson:
