476     GEORGE OATMAN

476      GEORGE6      (Lyman5,George4, George3, John2, Johannes1), son of Lyman and Lucy (Hartland) Oatman, was born at Arlington or Middletown, Vermont, ca 1807.  He married:  1) Louisann Cook, 27 December 1831, (Mecca), Trumbull County, Ohio; 2) Julia A. Cheney, who was born about 1822 in Ohio.

In the 1850 census of Hancock County, Illinois, George, a carpenter born in Vermont, was 48 years old; in 1860 he is listed as 53 years old.

In Gregg's History of Hancock County [1881], he and John Sperry, Florella Oatman's husband (#482), were said to have been two of the original settlers of LaHarpe, Illinois, which was settled ca 1830.  Since Lyman Oatman's name was not included, it is probable that George and his future brother-in-law went to LaHarpe ahead of their families, and returned to Trumbull County, Ohio, to shepherd the Oatman and Sperry families to LaHarpe, a fact borne out by George's marriage to Louisann Cook in Trumbull County, December 1831, and John Sperry's marriage to Florella there on 14 March 1832.

His second wife, Julia, was born in Ohio ca 1822/1827.  The following children are taken from census records.  In 1850 were listed two children--Linus, 12, and Sarah A., 10, both born in Indiana--who were possibly Julia's children from a previous marriage.

George m. 2) Maria E.      Charles worked as a railroad worker before retiring by 1930 at age 76.  In 1900 his wife is Marie E., in 1910 his wife is shown as Ida, but in 1920 and 1930, his wife is again Maria E.  The four census records do not indicate two marriages: in 1900 they had been married for 18 years; in 1910, for 28 years and both had been married only once.  Possibly Ida was Marie’s nickname.  Children, surname Oatman:
