5860 MELVIN OATMAN
5860 MELVIN9 (Milo8, John7, Eli6, Darius5, Benjamin4, George3, John2, Johannes1son of Milo and
Margaret (Towns) Oatman, was born 15 March 1922. He married Bernice, daughter of Lester and
Martha Myhre Hurst on 10 December 1945.
Melvin joined the
L.A.A. Battery in Brantford, Ontario, on 1 June 1940 and served overseas in
World War II. He was seriously wounded
on 20 October 1944, and subsequently returned home.
An obituary of his
death, on 20 July 1990, reads:
"OATMAN -
MELVIN, while visiting from Vancouver, after moving from Cambridge and formerly
Brantford, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 20, 1990, at the Brantford
General Hospital in his 69th year.
[Surviving] him is his wife, Bernice, from Vancouver; son Doug, his
daughter in law Donna, Grandchildren Nick and Kim and her fiancee, Shawn, all
of Brantford; son Roger of Vancouver; daughter Sherry Moco, son in law Joe and
Grandsons David, Mark and Adam. Mel was
a personal man and liked by those who knew him.
Veteran of the second world war and a life member of the Royal Canadian
Legion Branch 126, Cambridge, now is survived by his sister, Pauline Stonham,
brother in law Bill Stonham, brother in law Charles Smith, sister in law Ruth
Oatman and nephews and nieces. He is
predeceased by his parents, two brothers Harold and Victor and a sister
Ilean. Arrangements entrusted to the
Beckett-Glaves Family Funeral Centre, 88 Brant Avenue in Brantford with Rev.
Irwin officiating. Funeral service at
3:30 Monday, Interment at Memorial Gardens, Surry, B.C."
