76 ISAAC OATMAN
76 ISAAC5 (Samuel4,
George3, John2, Johannes1), son of Samuel and
Hannah (Wooster), Oatman, was born 11 April 1777, Derby, New Haven County,
Connecticut, and was baptized 20 July 1777 at St. James Episcopal Church in
Derby.
Isaac married 1)
Mary Dayton, daughter of Richard and Patience (Geer) Otis who died 28 September
1831 at the age of 54 and is buried next to Isaac in the State Road
(Honeyville) Cemetery, Adams Center, Jefferson County, New York. The 1810 census of Adams lists Isaac Oatman
as head of a household containing one male under 10, one male 16-45, two
females under 10, one female 10-16, and one female 26-45. He is also there in the 1820 census. By 1830, he is in a household consisting of
one male 20-30, one male 50-60, one female 20-30, and one female 60-70. From these statistics, it appears that Isaac
and Mary had at least two other daughters.
Richard Oatman (#270), who previously had been listed as a son of
Benjamin and Bethia (Smith) Oatman (#22), was a son of Isaac and Polly as noted
in the "Register of Deaths of the Town of Adams, New York."
Isaac married 2)
ca 1833 to Sinai/Sina Mills, who was born ca 1784 and
died 22 October 1848 at Adams Center, eldest daughter of John and Lydia
Mills. Sinai was the widow of Hezekiah
Richards, and their daughter Lydia Richards married Elijah Oatman (#98). A son, Isaac Richards, married Isaac and
Mary's daughter, Louica (see #271). Sinai's probate file contains a paper in
which Isaac states: "I will not interfear with anyone takeing out
letters of administration." Isaac
and Mary lived next door to Sinai and Hezekiah in 1820.
The death register
of Adams includes an Isaac, age 66, widowed, born in Connecticut, who died in
May 1850. The age at his death, 66, is a
few years short of what Isaac's would have been according to the birth date of 1777, but feel this is the same Isaac.
