83     DYER OATMAN

83        DYER5     (Samuel4, George3, John2, Johannes1), son of Samuel and Susanna Oatman, was born at Oxford, New Haven County, Connecticut, and baptized there 31 July 1796; he died at Arlington, Bennington County, Vermont, in 1877.

He married:  1) Clara Weaver;  2) Clarissa Beebe, daughter of Gideon Beebe and  Thankful Cook.  Clarissa was born about 1803.  She was originally said to have died 16 November 1825 at the age of 27 years; however, she is in the 1850 census of Arlington, age 47, with Dyer, age 52, a farmer, and son George, age 20.  Clarissa is also listed in the 1860 census with Dyer.

Children of Dyer and 2) Clarissa (Beebe) Oatman:

306      Julia, b. ca 1818; m. Elisha Matteson, 16 Nov 1837.  Julia apparently died fairly young.  In the 1860 census of Arlington, Bennington Co., VT, Elisha, age 46, is head of a family consisting of Cata, his wife, age 45, and the following children:  Lydia A., 17; Hellen, 12; William Henry, 6; and Schyler, 5.  Julia's son, Charles, was living with his grandparents, Dyer and Clarissa, in 1860, and George's whereabouts is unknown.  In 1860, Charles was 14, which leads us to believe that Lydia A., who was b. ca 1843, is also Julia's child.  Children, surname Matteson:

A         Charles E., b. ca 1846, NY.  He is living with Dyer and Clarissa Oatman, his grandparents, in 1860, Arlington, VT.

B         George D.

307      Anna C., b. 1819; d. 28 Nov 1846; unmarried

308      Theodore, b. 1822; d. 20 Jan 1848.  It is believed he died without issue.

309      Gilbert Edwin, b. 2 Jun 1824; m. Ophelia Adelaide Lasalle, 29 Jun 1866

310      Nicholas, b. 1826; m. Mary _____, b. ca 1827

311      George B., b. Nov 1830, VT; m. 1) Jane Ann Briggs; 2) Jane Wilcox, b. Jan 1851, VT.  George and Jane A. Oatman, both age 30, were living with Dyer and Clarissa in 1860, Arlington, VT.  By 1870, also in Arlington, George and Jane remained in his parents’ household, with a son Charles D., aged 7, as well as in 1880, where Clarissa lived with them after Dyer had died.
