97     TRUMAN OATMAN

 

 

97        TRUMAN5     (Benjamin4, George3, John2, Johannes1), son of Benjamin and Bethia (Smith) Oatman, was born in Jefferson or Washington County, New York, in 1787 and died 20 March 1843, Adams Center, Jefferson County, New York, at the age of 56.  He married Orra Perry, born 1790, died 22 November 1861 at the age of 71.  Both are buried in State Road (Honeyville) Cemetery, Adams Center, Jefferson County, New York.

 

Truman served in the War of 1812.  In 1810 he was living in Adams, New York, with two children under 10.  Since his oldest known child was Leonard, born in 1811, there may be two other children either unaccounted for or who died young.  In 1820 there were two males under 10, one male 10-15, and one male 26-44, one female under 10, one female 10-15, and one female 26-44; one person was listed in agriculture and one in manufacturing.  By 1830 he was the head of a family consisting of one male child under 5, one male 5-10, one male 15-20, one male 40-50, one male 70-80 (unknown), one female 30-40, one female 50-60, and one female 80-90 (unknown).  By 1850, Truman had died, and Orra and her youngest son Silas were living in the household of her daughter Lucy Chamberlain.

413      Philinda, b. ca Mar 1826; d. 24 Oct 1895, Adams Center, NY; m. Zebe Buell.  Zebe's Will was dated 26 Jan 1889 and in it names his wife and daughter.  Children, surname Buell:

414      Ezra, b. 24 Oct 1828; d. 25 Jul 1893, Charleston, Kalamazoo Co., MI; m. 20 Nov 1848, Adams, Jefferson Co., NY, Amanda "Mandy" Sopher, daughter of Palmer L. and Eliza (Strong?) Soper.  Mandy was born 24 Apr 1829, NY, d. 15 May 1893, Charleston, Kalamazoo Co., MI.  They moved to MI between 1851 and 1853.  Both are buried in Oak Grove Cem., Comstock Twp., Kalamazoo Co., MI.  Ezra was listed as a shoemaker in 1850, 1860 and 1870 censuses, and listed as a carpenter-joiner in 1880.  Children, surname Oatman:

                        F          Linnie/Pet, b. 27 Nov 1866, MI; d. 13 Apr 1963, CA; m. 5 Oct 1887, Eli R. Hallock (he b. 21 Feb 1865, Barry Co., MI; d. 28 Mar 1912, Plainwell, Allegan Co., MI.  Eli was bur. Oak Grove Cem., Comstock Twp., Kalamazoo Co., MI.  Children, surname Hallock:

415      Gaius, b. ca 1830; d. 16 Apr 1856, age 26; bur. State Road (Honeyville) Cem., Adams Center, Jefferson Co., NY; m. Eliza A. Rogers, 1 May 1849, NY.  This family was originally reported as having two children, Mary G. and Edgar B.  In the 1860 census, Eliza, 29, is a widow working as a milliner, with two daughters, Nettie, age 11, and Nellie, age 8, Edgar having died earlier.  It is unknown whether Nettie and Mary are the same.  Children, surname Oatman:
