19     DANIEL OATMAN

19        DANIEL4     (George3, John2, Johannes1), son of George and Ruth (Wooster)  Outman, was born in Ripton, Connecticut, 11 May 1747, and died 4 March 1803 in Arlington, Bennington County, Vermont.

He married ca 1768, Mary, daughter of Andrew Spencer of Arlington, Vermont.  (According to Patricia Godsey, descendant of Daniel and Mary Spencer Oatman, Mary Spencer was the daughter of Peleg and Audrey Spencer.  The fact that they named their first son Peleg could bear this out.  Her source is listed as records of St. James Episcopal Church at Arlington, Vermont, via the International Genealogical Index.)  Mary was born 1739 at Coventry, Kent County, Rhode Island, and died 14 November 1823 at the age of 84 at Arlington, Vermont.

Daniel came to Arlington with his father, probably about 1765, where he farmed and had a black smithing business.  The books of account of the business and papers pertaining to the settlement of Daniel's estate were in the possession of Andrew Oatman of Cambridge, New York, in 1934.

Other data appears in Arlington Town Records and on gravestones in Arlington church and cemetery records and on stones at Bennington Lower Cemetery.

There is a tradition in the family that Daniel served during the early years of the War of the American Revolution, but no record of such service appears in "Vermont Revolutionary Rolls".  The absence of such a record is not, however, conclusive.  The Vermont Revolutionary Rolls are made up of such pay tables and muster rolls as could be located and is not in any sense complete.

According to the best authorities, it does not list more than one-third of the men who served in the militia of the state during the years 1776-1778.
