4 JOHN OUTMAN
4 JOHN2 (Johannes1),
son of Johannes and Femmetje (Kock) Outman, was born "Johannes" in
New York City and was baptized in the Dutch Reformed Church 26 December
1691. He died in Stratford, Connecticut,
ca March 1754.
He married: 1) prior to 1719, Isabelle, daughter of
Captain James Williams. The Captain was
apparently not highly pleased with this marriage as indicated by his Will:
"In the name
of God, Amen. I, JAMES WILLIAMS, Esq.,
Captain of one of his Majesty's Independent Companies of New York, being in
perfect health. I leave to my daughter
Isabelle, wife of John Outman, 20 shillings, in bar of all claims to my estate
as sole heir and daughter. I leave to my
wife, Elizabeth, my old and new house lots of lands and premises where I now
live, and all my estate, and make her executor.

In September 1719,
John Outman of Stratford, formerly of New York, sued his wife Isabella for
divorce, charging desertion for three years.
The Connecticut Court found that “she never having lived in this colony,
it falls not under the jurisdiction of this Court.” Before 1725, she probably died or a divorce
was obtained in New York State.
John married: 2) on 31 December 1725, Elizabeth, daughter
of William and Deborah (Peacoke) Janes, born 5
November 1695. (In Early Connecticut
Marriages as Found on Ancient Church Records Prior to 1800 (Ed. Frederic W.
Bailey, 1968), a marriage is listed in Stratford, Fairfield County,
Connecticut, on 20 August 1747 between Elisabeth Bennet and John Oatman. History and Genealogy of the Families of Old
Fairfield, p. 574, states that William Smith, whose will was
proven 30 January 1748/9, named a daughter Elizabeth, wife of John Oatman,
Jr.
John was the only
surviving son of Johannes, and appears to have been somewhat unstable in his
youth. On 8 February 1715/1716, John
Outman, late of New York, now of Stratford, was tried before the County Court
of Fairfield for forcing his attentions on Abigail, wife of Nathaniel Benedict,
of Danbury, and also for his “profane cursing” of Philip Judd of Danbury. The husbands of his sisters, not himself,
were the trustees of his father’s estate.
