3231 MELVIN WILLIAM OATMAN

3231 MELVIN WILLIAM⁸ (John⁷, Eli⁶, Darius⁵, Benjamin⁴, George³, John², Johannes¹), son of John and Jannette (Cooper) Oatman, was born 14 February 1895, and was raised primarily in South Norwich, Oxford County, Ontario, later moving to Toronto. He married Garnett Aleatha Hazen, who died 22 February 1974. Melvin died 19 December 1959 and was brought to Tillsonburg for a graveside service conducted at the United Cemetery, New Road, by Rev. D. Morrison; his wife is buried with him. From the Tillsonburg newspaper of 24 December 1959:

"OATMAN: Former resident here, Melvin Oatman, 67, passed away Saturday at Toronto. He was an employee of Eaton's of Canada. He lived previously in [South Norwich].

Survivors are his wife, the former Garnia Hazen; two sons, John and James, both of Toronto; one daughter [sic], Mrs. Roda Summerville of Fort Williams [she was his sister]; two brothers, Milo of St. Williams and Alvin of Tillsonburg. Graveside service was conducted at the United Cemetery N.R., by Rev. Morrison, Monday at 2:00 p.m. H. A. Ostrander and Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements."
